Heaven or Hell

We have a party tonight in Droevendaal - joint forces of Droef 97 and 99 - HEAVEN and HELL PARTY. This is a dresscode. This is a behaviourcode. Given our last university achievements, I think we all belong to hell. So put on your horns and tales and see you there!

Correction: we may actually like it in hell, and we did not deserve it, so we should all go to party in heaven. Put on your angel wings and halos and see you there!

Let's get serious again - Africa!

Okay, we have one idea - fence - which is not even Marcel's idea. Guys, seriously, let's use our brilliant minds! Again. Because we haven't been using them recently too much, have we? Let's face it - as Tanya said, we are s*uckers. What is going on here, I am asking? What happened to the Escobar spirit? We're not only information illiterate, we are lazy and useless. Yes, useless. Let me say it again - useless. Read my lips - useless. So - Africa! UNESCO competition. Few posts earlier. I mean it.

Participatory development of scenarios - workshop on Thursday, April 22

OtherWise is organizing a workshop on participatory development of scenarios.
This is a methodology which gives the opportunity of involving different stakeholders in creating stories or snapshots of what the future could possibly look like. Scenarios help people throughout entire decision-making processes, assisting them in present to find sustainable alternatives towards the future.

Horacio Narvaez-Mena did his MSc research on Participatory Development of Scenarios in Uganda. On the 22nd of April, Horacio will let you take part in a participatory workshop on this method. After the workshop he will discuss the background of this method, and explain how he used it in his research.

I think it is worth trying! If we want to join the workshop, we should send email to OtherWise: otherwise@wur.nl

Pakistan/Afghanistan region lecture 2

Well, the speaker was down with malaria, so there was no lecture, but there were Afghans, Pakistani, Indians and Chinese in the room (we love Wageningen!) so it turned out more than fine. And the food was great, we brought some home...

Robert Fisk (on TV) said: They want freedom from us.
Afghanistan said: If you respect an Afghan he'll pay you with double respect. He can be your biggest friend or your worst enemy.
Pakistan said: We don't want Kashmir, we don't need Kashmir, we want Kashmir to be independent if this is the will of its people.
India said: Deviding the region along the religious and ethnic lines was an idea of the British and it was unnecesary.
China said: We don't want to be second America.
Pakistan said: International AID should have gone for the higher education and not the primary education - it did not work.
Afghanistan said: We are a fragile state.
China said: All we do is pure business.
Angela from Studium Generale said: I expected more political activism here.

Getting better in getting out - Tuesday evening in Utrecht

We are getting better and better in getting out.
This time we not only got out but also got in - into the Rodrigo and Gabriela's world of guitar music! And we loved it!

With our brave captain Tanya, co-pilot Aogan, Marcel, Maartje, Nacho, Ola and Laurens on the board of our AIR TANYA we went to the fantastic city of Utrecht. Before we reached our final destination - Tivoli, we had been faced with local hooligans and strict Dutch rules. But finally...
Interesting things happened allready in the cloakroom - we saw some Wageningen people, including M. Nujten.
The supporting band was awesome (oh, the young drummer!). But Rodrigo y Gabriela, oh, oh, they were amazing! It is incredible what you can do with only two guitars! (okay, now many things come to my mind, but let's leave it).
Overwhelmed by all that music, Aogan and Nacho kept drinking - Aogan because he was happy (when Aogan's happy everybody's happy!) and Nacho because he discovered that people (the public) were empty inside.
Aogan and Ola riverdanced until Ola's leg almost fell off but finally it was Tanya who took off her shoes.
And it has to be said - we did not behave ourselves (and this time it was not Marcel who was the most impolite).
After the concert Maartje showed us a nice bar with life music where we decided to make even more life music showing impressing furniture drumming skills.
Some of us got engaged in a hot political debate which got us some well deserved attention from one of the weiters - concerned about the safety of other guests he wanted to make sure it was a friendly debate and not a foreplay of a violent conflict. Apparently he has never seen any MID students affected by the unbearable routine of life in Wageningen before...

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

Hi folks! Hello and happy new week!
Anna is finally back in Wageningen (and actually not joining the Dutch course tonight).
What is the division of tasks this week?

Cheerio & cu soon!

We are creative from time to time

Here's the link to a beautiful song "Daño en mi Corazón"

http://www.myspace.com/iamveryfeeling#

Some of us were involved in the making of the song. The hair story was inspired by Aogan's personal story. The hospital story was inspired by Ola's personal story and the initial idea to take the guy to the clinic came from Tanya. Gee, we are inspired and inspiring! Yeah yeah yeah!

Oh, and I think we shold seriously consider moving to Saskatchewan, because it is filled with breathtaking attractions and friendly people and its economy is truly innovative by nature:

Scottish higland cattle

Look what Marcel poked yesterday!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highland_cattle

Robert van 't Hoff - the architect that Aogan's dad told us about

"The Dutch avant-garde architect Robert van ’t Hoff (1887-1979) realized a small and distinctive oeuvre. As a member of De Stijl, he strove together with other artists to create a new everyday environment. His work is characterized by a strong social engagement stemming from an anarcho-communist body of thought".
(source: www.kmm.nl)

But the story was that once he got socially engaged (designing communal buildings, as far as I remember) his career ended - none of his social projects fuelled by his beautiful ideals was ever realized. And he died in a small house in England.

I don't know how about you guys, but I don't mind dying in a small house in England.

Hard to admit but... we went THERE

Yes, we did. Aogan, Marcel and Ola. This is bad. This is sad.

However, Ola had a very interesting conversation with a Phd from Mali about the situation in Africa (and in Mali in particular) and learned a lot of things.

And before we ended up this way we all had a very interesting conversation with Aogan's dad! Too bad that Marcel was so rude. We need to organize a politeness workshop.

Hell, yeah, we got out again!

Yeah yeah yeah!

Pakistan lecture - a short report

Who was there?
Aogan, Ola and Tanya

What happened?
We learned a lot about the situation/importance of the tribal areas of Pakistan.
We learned about a shift in the International Community's discourse - now "talking to the Taliban" is on, killing them is passe.
There were people present from Pakistan and Afghanistan who made their points (one more reason to love Wageningen, there are always some locals on the board).
We observed the "fear of the Other" when a man from Pakistan started to ask questions and made some strong points.
Ola was taken for a Pakistani (but not because of any particular point she was making, it's just the looks!).
Someone else asked Tanya's water question (but was the answer satisfactory?).
We subscribed for the next Wednesday's lecture - there will be food!

And another thing:
have you noticed how polite people form Pakistan and Afghanistan were? So are our Nepalese classmates. And we are so NOT. Seriously, people. I was thinking - maybe we should make an effort to be POLITE. (Yes, Marcel, you too).

Tonight: Pakistan + Don't tell mum (gay party)

at 20:00 in LA13 an interesting lecture:
How governable is Pakistan and what does its stability have to do with conflicts in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the region?
The speaker, Christa Meindersma, has a really interesting cv. Previously she worked as senior political adviser at the United Nations and the Netherlands’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She has been involved in peace negotiations and policy advise in East Timor, Nigeria, Cameroon, Kosovo, Darfur, Nepal and New York. Quite impressive, huh?

at 23:00 in Junushoff the fifth edition of the one and only famous Unitas Gay Party - Don’t Tell Mum 5
They say this night we can dress and act as naughty and queer as we want… they won’t judge! So, what do you think?
